Murder Trial Begins For Man Accused of Shooting Miami-Dade High Schooler Over Yeezys

The trial of Adrian Cosby, 23, accused of shooting and killing high school senior Andrea Camps Lacayo in a botched sneaker sale in April 2020, began Tuesday in southwest Miami-Dade. Camps Lacayo, 18, was killed during a meeting to sell popular Yeezy sneakers, a shoe line created by rapper Kanye West. The tragic incident unfolded when the sale turned violent, leaving Camps Lacayo dead and her boyfriend, Sergio Berben, injured. Cosby now faces charges of murder and attempted murder, stemming from the incident, while George Walton, his accomplice, was convicted eight months ago of first-degree murder for his involvement, despite not being the actual shooter.

The Fatal Encounter

According to authorities, Berben and Camps Lacayo arranged to sell Walton three pairs of Yeezy sneakers valued at $935. The pair met Walton for the transaction, and after a brief discussion, Walton requested to try on the shoes. Berben, however, asked to see the payment first, as outlined in an arrest report. As the exchange took place, Cosby allegedly approached the driver’s side of Berben’s vehicle and opened fire, shooting both Berben and Camps Lacayo. Berben, who survived the attack, testified in court on Tuesday, recounting the traumatic events of that day. He shot and killed my girlfriend and tried to kill me as well,” Berben told jurors, providing a chilling account of the shooting. After the shots were fired, Berben managed to drive away, but he stopped along the side of the road as Camps Lacayo’s condition worsened rapidly. First responders soon arrived, but it was too late to save the young woman’s life.

Heartbreaking Testimony

During the trial, Miami-Dade Police Sgt. Jenna Parmenter also took the stand, offering insight into Camps Lacayo’s final moments. Parmenter recalled how the victim struggled to remain conscious after the shooting. “She was going in and out of consciousness,” Parmenter said, adding that Camps Lacayo asked if she would be okay, moments before fading into unconsciousness for the last time. The courtroom listened as Berben and Sgt. Parmenter shared emotional testimonies about the heartbreaking loss of a promising young life. Camps Lacayo, who was only 18 years old, was a high school senior at the time of her death, leaving behind friends, family, and a community grieving over her senseless murder.

Cosby Faces Life in Prison

If convicted, Cosby faces a life sentence, similar to Walton, who is already serving time after being found guilty of first-degree murder and attempted murder in the case. Walton was charged despite not being the shooter, as he had been involved in the robbery plan that led to Camps Lacayo’s death and Berben’s injury.

The trial continues, and the prosecution seeks justice for Camps Lacayo’s untimely death, while the defense prepares its arguments in an attempt to reduce the severity of Cosby’s sentencing. The community remains heartbroken, as the trial unfolds, hoping for closure after such a devastating and unnecessary loss of life.
