Two former Broward Sheriff’s deputies, Tracy Wade, 51, and Carolyn Wade, 49, were convicted of COVID-19 relief fraud in a federal jury trial, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Florida reported. The charges included conspiracy to commit wire fraud, wire fraud, and making false statements to the Small Business Administration (SBA) regarding their Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) loans.

In 2021, the Wades submitted falsified IRS tax forms in order to qualify for PPP loans. During the trial, evidence revealed that they falsely claimed the funds would cover payroll expenses. Federal investigators emphasized the importance of holding accountable those who misused relief funds intended for businesses impacted by the pandemic.

Their convictions mark another case in ongoing efforts to combat pandemic-related financial fraud, signaling federal authorities’ commitment to prosecuting those who exploited government relief programs.
