Two repeat offenders in Miami Beachโs Entertainment District, pretending to be rideshare drivers, were arrested and now face multiple charges, according to Miami Beach police on Friday.
Fevry Gentillon, 43, and Kerbert Jean, 56, were detained by the Criminal Investigations Division of the Miami Beach Police Department. After a court appearance on Friday, they were denied bail and are being held at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center.
Police reported that the suspects used a risky robbery scheme, preying on intoxicated individuals by posing as rideshare drivers to rob them, sometimes using a firearm during these crimes.
In court, an undercover detective testified that the alleged incident took place earlier this month at the corner of Washington Avenue and 11th Street, as the victim was leaving a bar.
“I got video surveillance from in front of Twist nightclub, which shows the victims entering the defendant’s vehicle,” the detective said.
The victim, reportedly a tourist, confirmed police accounts regarding the suspects. โThey work as cab drivers during the day but pretend to be rideshare drivers while committing these crimes,โ said police spokesperson Christopher Bee. โAfter the victims get into their vehicle, the suspects drive them to different spots around the city and rob them at gunpoint.โ According to the undercover detective, the victim later awoke in a hotel in Miamiโs Brickell area. This investigation started after police noticed a pattern of similar incidents.
Detectives tracked down and arrested the suspects using thorough analysis and proactive investigation by the MBPDโs Robbery Unit, according to police. The suspects now face multiple charges, including armed robbery with a firearm, strong-arm robbery, kidnapping, attempted kidnapping, an organized scheme to defraud, identity theft, illegal possession of a credit or debit card, fraudulent use of a credit card, and third-degree grand theft.
During the bond hearing, Judge Mindy Glazer mentioned another alleged crime by Gentillon involving an intoxicated tourist who entered an unknown vehicle in South Beach, just south of Fifth Street. Police advised visitors in the area who use rideshare services to exercise caution by verifying the driverโs identity, the make and model of the vehicle, and confirming the license plate. They believe additional victims may have been targeted by these suspects.
Chief Wayne Jones said in a news release, โWe regard incidents of this nature with utmost seriousness and are committed to diligently pursuing accountability for those responsible. Our primary focus is to ensure the safety of Miami Beach.”
