Woman, 43, Dies After Stolen Van Collides with Sedan She was Driving in East Wichita

A 43-year-old woman from Hutchinson tragically lost her life on Monday in a crash involving a stolen vehicle in east Wichita. Wichita police reported the incident, which unfolded after a high-stakes pursuit of a stolen vehicle in multiple areas across the city. The victim’s identity has not yet been released. Earlier that day, Wichita police had identified a stolen vehicle parked at the River Walk Apartments in the 2700 block of South Emporia. Officers, with assistance from the Kansas Highway Patrol’s (KHP) mobile air unit, began covertly following the stolen vehicle without alerting its occupants to avoid escalating the situation.

Stolen Vehicle Attempts Escape Despite Spike Strips

Around noon, the stolen vehicle arrived at a Walmart located at 29th and Rock Road. Officers deployed spike strips to prevent it from fleeing, successfully deflating two of the vehicle’s tires. However, the suspect vehicle still managed to escape the Walmart parking lot, striking a police vehicle in the process. Officers did not engage in a direct pursuit, opting to continue monitoring from above with KHP’s aerial assistance. The stolen vehicle then traveled to a business on North Webb Road near 35th Street, where two individuals exited and attempted to flee on foot. Police quickly apprehended one suspect, but the second individual, a 24-year-old woman from Wichita, managed to evade capture. Desperate to escape, she commandeered a van from the business and drove south on Webb Road at high speed.

Tragic Collision Claims Innocent Life

As the suspect sped down Webb Road in the stolen van, she collided with a sedan at the intersection of 29th and Wilderness. The driver of the sedan, a 43-year-old Hutchinson woman, suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. The suspect was subsequently taken to a local hospital for evaluation and then arrested. Police did not release further information regarding her condition or details about the collision.

Ongoing Investigation with Press Conference Expected

Wichita police stated that the investigation is in its preliminary stages, with additional information anticipated in the coming days. Police spokesperson Aaron Moses announced that a press conference is expected to provide further details surrounding the incident later in the week. He added, “Due to the early nature of this investigation, we’re not going to take questions at this point.”
