The Dodgers responded by narrowing the gap to 5-4, thanks to Will Smith’s solo homer and Freddie Freeman’s RBI groundout in the fifth inning. However, Yankees catcher Austin Wells increased the lead to 6-4 with a two-run homer in the sixth off Landon Knack.
Finally, team captain Aaron Judge joined in with his first hit of the night, an RBI single that brought in Juan Soto, extending the Yankees’ lead to 11-4.
Tim Mayza took the mound for the ninth inning, retiring the Dodgers’ Chris Taylor, Kike Hernandez, and Will Smith in succession to secure an 11-4 victory for the Yankees. With the World Series now at 3-1, the two teams will face off again on Wednesday, both aiming to keep the series going.
Leading up to Game 4, some fans and analysts speculated about the possibility of seeing Gerrit Cole pitch on Tuesday. However, Aaron Boone stayed firm in his strategy and opted to start rookie Luis Gil for the crucial must-win game.
It appears that Boone’s strategy paid off. Although Gil gave up four runs in four innings, the Yankees’ strong offensive performance, along with excellent bullpen pitching, supported him well. Game 5 is another must-win for the Yankees, as the Dodgers still lead the series 3-1.
The Yankees are expected to start their ace, Gerrit Cole, the 2023 AL Cy Young winner, to take charge on the mound. With their offense clicking, the Yankees aim to focus on winning one game at a time in hopes of eventually overcoming the Dodgers in seven games.
