Police are currently searching for the driver who ran over a man lying in front of their vehicle, resulting in his death, in Fort Lauderdale.

The incident occurred shortly after 2 a.m. on Sunday in the 100 block of NW 1st Street. Authorities reported that the victim, 73-year-old Esperant Lahens, had laid down in front of a parked vehicle. Moments later, three individuals entered the Jeep, and as the driver pulled forward to leave the parking space, the vehicle struck Lahens, who was resting against the curb. Fort Lauderdale police stated, “It is unknown if the driver was aware of the pedestrian at the time of the incident.”

At approximately 6:25 a.m., a passerby discovered Lahens unresponsive and promptly called 911. Unfortunately, he was pronounced dead at the scene. Family members chose not to speak on camera but told NBC6 that Lahens was a kind person who struggled with mental health issues.
