Driver Arrested After Deadly Hit-and-Run Crash in SW Miami-Dade
A fatal hit-and-run incident early Sunday morning claimed the life of a pedestrian in southwest Miami-Dade, leaving authorities and the community on edge. According to the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP), the accident occurred as a gray Genesis, driven by 26-year-old Jorge G. Arevalo Sorto, traveled north on U.S. 1 near Southwest 214th Street. While the driver approached the intersection, a man attempted to cross U.S. 1, only to be struck by the vehicle. Rather than stopping to assist the injured pedestrian, the driver left the scene, leaving the victim critically injured on the road.
Emergency Response and Fatal Outcome
First responders quickly arrived at the scene and rushed the pedestrian to the hospital, but, tragically, he did not survive. His identity has yet to be publicly disclosed as authorities notify his family. The fatal incident has left a deep mark on the community, raising concerns about traffic safety and the responsibility of drivers to remain on the scene in accidents involving pedestrians.
Driver Arrested, Facing Serious Charges
Shortly after the crash, law enforcement officials tracked down the Genesis and arrested Arevalo Sorto. He now faces a serious charge of leaving the scene of a crash involving death. This charge reflects the severity of the offense, as leaving an injured individual without assistance is viewed as a serious violation under Florida law. According to Miami-Dade jail records, Arevalo Sorto remains in custody, awaiting further legal proceedings.
Hit-and-run cases, especially those leading to fatalities, are taken seriously by Florida law enforcement. FHP officials urge drivers involved in any crash to remain at the scene and assist the injured, as leaving can not only escalate legal consequences but also prevent timely medical intervention that could save lives. This tragic incident serves as a reminder of the responsibility every driver holds in ensuring the safety of pedestrians and others on the road.
