Saints fire Dennis Allen after humiliating loss to Panthers

A day after New Orleans’ 23–22 loss to lowly Carolina, the Saints dismissed head coach Dennis Allen on Monday morning. Following back-to-back victories against the Panthers and Cowboys to start the season, it was the Saints’ eighth consecutive defeat. Special teams coordinator Darren Rizzi was anticipated to be named interim head coach, according to NFL.com.

In their first two games of the season, the Saints’ offense scored 91 points, demonstrating their amazing potential. But once Derek Carr was injured against the Chiefs in Week 5, the season swiftly collapsed, with close defeats to the Eagles and Falcons coming next. Spencer Rattler, a fifth-round rookie, took over the offense for the Saints, and New Orleans lost to the Bucs and Broncos after being outscored 110-45.

The Saints led for the majority of Sunday’s game in Carolina after Carr’s return, but the 1-7 Panthers took the lead at 2:16 thanks to a score from Chuba Hubbard. Receiver Chris Olave suffered a frightening injury following a hard hit on an over-the-middle ball during the game, which the Saints were predicted to win by a touchdown.

Michael Thomas, a former Saints wide receiver, then launched into a lengthy tirade against X, accusing Carr of endangering Olave. Before the 2022 season, Allen, 52, was elevated to head coach of the Saints following Sean Payton’s temporary retirement. He has spent seven seasons as Payton’s offensive coordinator.

Allen’s previous head coaching opportunity with the Raiders ended similarly, and he ends his time in New Orleans with 18–25. After the Raiders went 0–4 in 2014, Allen was also fired early in his third season. His career record with the Raiders was 8-28. On Sunday, the Saints will host the Falcons.
