Tony Todd, Candyman Star and Beloved Horror Icon, Dies at 69
Tony Todd, a prolific actor who was particularly well-liked by horror fans for his work in the genre, died on November 6 at his home in Los Angeles. Todd’s representatives acknowledged his death, according to Deadline, although the cause of death is yet unknown. He was sixty-nine.
The birthdate of Todd was December 4, 1954. He attended the Eugene O’Neil National Actors Theatre Institute to study theater, and by the mid-1980s, he was making appearances in TV series and films. He costarred with Charlie Sheen, Johnny Depp, and Willem Dafoe in Oliver Stone’s critically acclaimed 1986 war movie Platoon in one of his very first performances. In addition to other Oscars, the movie won Best Picture at the Academy Awards, which helped Todd’s career take off.
Todd played Ben in Tom Savini’s 1990 adaptation of George A. Romero’s zombie film Night of the Living Dead, which became one of his most well-known horror performances. He would go on to play the title character in the horror classic Candyman, which came out in 1992 and had multiple sequels. Candyman: Farewell to the flesh (1995) and Candyman: Day of the Dead (1999) would see Todd return. More recently, in 2021, he would return to the franchise by making an appearance in the Candyman film directed by Nia DaCosta.
Todd’s pivotal part in the Final Destination franchise is another reason for his notoriety. Since the 2000 original, he had been playing the enigmatic figure William Bludworth in Final Destination movies. Todd is most known for his roles as Worf’s brother Kurn in Deep Space Nine and Star Trek: The Next Generation. He also played an older Jake Sisko in one episode for the latter, and in Star Trek: Voyager, he played an Alpha Hirogen in a different role. He would voice Rodek (formerly Kurn) in the video game Star Trek Online, reprising his role. Along with his previous TV credits including Matlock, Law & Order, The X-Files, Murder, She Wrote, Smallville, Charmed, 24, Young Justice, Dead Summer, and The Orville, Todd also provided the voice of Teddy Sears’ Zoom in the television series The Flash.
Todd recently provided the voiceover for Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, a video game. Additionally, he recently voiced Venom in the Spider-Man 2 video game from 2023. Todd received a British Academy Game Awards voice acting nomination for his portrayal of Venom.
