A spokesperson for Royal Caribbean reported that on Thursday, a passenger aboard the Explorer of the Seas, a cruise ship traveling to Miami, was injured after being struck by a strong wind gust.
As a result of the injury, the passenger was required to disembark the ship in Spain to receive the necessary medical treatment. The incident occurred during the voyage, prompting an unexpected stop for the passengerโs care.
โDuring an unexpected wind gust near Tenerife, Spain, one of our sailings experienced sudden movement. One of our guests was injured and requires additional medical care, so the ship will make a call in Las Palmas, Spain for a medical disembarkation,” a spokesperson said.
Further details about the nature and severity of the injuries sustained by the passenger were not immediately disclosed, and it remains unclear how serious the condition is at this time.
Alecsander Kohn, a passenger aboard the ship, was present during the incident and shared photos that captured some of the damage and disarray caused by the powerful wind gust. These images depicted the aftermath of the sudden weather event onboard.
The Explorer of the Seas set sail from Barcelona, Spain, on November 2 and, according to vessel tracking information, is scheduled to arrive in Miami on November 14. The ship is currently making its way across the Atlantic on its planned route.
Royal Caribbean stated that it has been in contact with guests to inform them of any changes to the cruiseโs itinerary. The Explorer of the Seas, a ship registered in the Bahamas, first launched in 2000. It can accommodate up to 4,290 passengers and features a variety of amenities for guests to enjoy. Among these are an ice skating rink, a mini golf course, and a sports court, as detailed on the companyโs official website.
