Missing Green Lake Kayaker Believed to Be Alive and Hiding Abroad, Authorities Say

GREEN LAKE — After an extensive three-month search, authorities now believe that a kayaker reported missing from Green Lake may have staged his disappearance and fled the country. In a surprising update on Nov. 8, the Green Lake County Sheriff’s Office announced that Ryan Borgwardt, a 44-year-old kayaker, is likely alive and potentially hiding in Eastern Europe.

Sheriff Mark Podoll addressed the press to reveal the unexpected developments in the case. The investigation uncovered significant evidence suggesting Borgwardt had planned his disappearance. Key discoveries included a second passport in his possession, a replaced laptop hard drive, inquiries about transferring funds to foreign banks, and a life insurance policy he took out earlier in the year valued at $375,000.

“Due to the discovery of this new evidence, we are confident that Ryan is not located in Green Lake, and we have ended all search efforts associated with Green Lake,” Podoll stated. “At this time, we believe that Ryan is alive and likely in Eastern Europe.”

Authorities have been searching for Borgwardt since his disappearance was reported in August. Initially, rescue teams scoured Green Lake and surrounding areas, operating under the belief that Borgwardt may have encountered trouble while kayaking. However, as the investigation continued, investigators became aware of unusual activities that pointed to a staged disappearance.

Family members and locals have reacted with shock, as Borgwardt was widely known in the Green Lake community. Many assumed he was lost in a tragic accident, and the search efforts included both local volunteers and state resources.

The Sheriff’s Office is now working with federal agencies to trace Borgwardt’s steps and establish any connections he may have in Europe. The case has raised questions about Borgwardt’s motives and potential plans, leaving friends and family with many unanswered questions.

While officials did not disclose details about any potential accomplices, they indicated that the investigation remains active. “Our primary goal now is to bring Ryan back to face any legal consequences tied to his actions,” Podoll noted.

The development has stirred conversations about the lengths individuals might go to disappear from their lives. For now, the community awaits further updates, as the search has turned from Green Lake’s shores to the broader international stage.
