Missing Green Lake Kayaker Believed to Be Alive and Hiding Abroad, Authorities Say

GREEN LAKE — After an extensive three-month search, authorities now believe that a kayaker reported missing from Green Lake may have staged his disappearance and fled the country. In a surprising update on Nov. 8, the Green Lake County Sheriff’s Office announced that Ryan Borgwardt, a 44-year-old kayaker, is likely alive and potentially hiding in Eastern Europe.

Sheriff Mark Podoll addressed the press to reveal the unexpected developments in the case. The investigation uncovered significant evidence suggesting Borgwardt had planned his disappearance. Key discoveries included a second passport in his possession, a replaced laptop hard drive, inquiries about transferring funds to foreign banks, and a life insurance policy he took out earlier in the year valued at $375,000.

“Due to the discovery of this new evidence, we are confident that Ryan is not located in Green Lake, and we have ended all search efforts associated with Green Lake,” Podoll stated. “At this time, we believe that Ryan is alive and likely in Eastern Europe.”

Authorities have been searching for Borgwardt since his disappearance was reported in August.
