In a tragic boating accident off the Card Sound Bridge near Pumpkin Key in the Florida Keys, one person was killed and two others were injured Saturday morning. Miami-Dade Fire Rescue reported receiving calls about the accident at 10:26 a.m., prompting a swift and extensive emergency response, including air rescues and dive teams.

According to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC), the incident involved a 34-foot Nor-Tech boat with three people on board. While traveling south, the boat made a sudden and sharp turn, causing all three passengers to be ejected into the water. Rescue teams were dispatched immediately to retrieve the victims, with two of them requiring helicopter transport to a nearby trauma center. Unfortunately, one of the individuals did not survive.
Rescue Efforts and Search Operations
The rescue operation was complex, requiring a “hoist operation” where Miami-Dade Fire Rescue used two helicopters equipped with a stokes basket to lift and transport two individuals from the water to a trauma center. This critical lifesaving maneuver is generally reserved for high-stakes situations where access by boat or on foot is limited or impossible.
A third passenger was initially unaccounted for, prompting Miami-Dade Fire Rescue to deploy divers to the accident site. The divers were able to locate and retrieve the individual, completing the search and rescue phase. Authorities have not released further information about the condition of the survivors or the deceased. However, late on Saturday night, Miami-Dade Police, Miami-Dade Fire Rescue, and FWC returned to the waters near Pumpkin Key to retrieve a large, unidentified object from the area. It remains uncertain if this object was related to the boat involved in the accident.
