Tony Todd, the renowned actor best known for his iconic role in the horror classic Candyman and its 2021 sequel, tragically passed away on Wednesday at the age of 69. His death was confirmed by his representative, Jeffrey Goldberg. Todd’s portrayal of the menacing and unforgettable titular character in Candyman made him a legend within the horror genre, and he continued to leave a lasting impact on fans with his return in the 2021 revival of the film.
His contributions to both horror and cinema as a whole have cemented his place as one of the genre’s most respected figures.
“Regretfully, I can confirm that my friend and client of over 30 years, Tony Todd, has passed away on Wednesday, November 6, 2024 at 11:50 p.m. peacefully at his home in Marina Del Rey,” said Goldberg. “I am lucky to have been able to work with this amazing man and I will miss him every single day.”
Over the course of his four-decade career, Tony Todd showcased his versatile talent across a wide range of genres. Beginning with his film debut in 1986, his extensive resume includes notable roles in the Academy Award-winning “Platoon” and the “Final Destination” series, among many others.
Tony Todd is perhaps most famous for his portrayal of Daniel Robitaille, the vengeful spirit at the center of the 1992 horror film Candyman and its 2021 sequel. His character, a Black artist and the son of a slave, became the terrifying figure of Candyman after being brutally murdered for his relationship with a White woman. The film, directed by Bernard Rose, also featured Virginia Madsen as a graduate student in Chicago, researching the dark legend of Candyman for her thesis. Todd’s chilling performance left an indelible mark on the horror genre.
In 2021, Todd returned to his iconic role in the sequel, Candyman, directed by Nia DaCosta. The new film followed artist Anthony McCoy, played by Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, who becomes entangled in the Candyman legend while grappling with his own artistic and personal identity. Todd’s return to the role brought a sense of continuity and tribute to the character he helped immortalize.
Following Todd’s passing, Virginia Madsen took to Instagram to honor him, sharing a heartfelt message: “The great actor Tony Todd has left us and now is an angel. As he was in life. More later but I can’t right now. I love you.” New Line Cinema, the studio behind the Final Destination series, also posted a tribute to Todd, acknowledging his significant impact on the horror industry and the many fans who were touched by his work.
“The industry has lost a legend. We have lost a cherished friend. Rest in peace, Tony,” read the post.
Tony Todd was born on December 4, 1954, in Washington, D.C. His passion for acting led him to pursue formal training at the prestigious Eugene O’Neill National Theatre Institute and the Trinity Repertory Conservatory. These experiences helped hone his craft and set the stage for his career in both television and film.
Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, Todd made numerous guest appearances on popular TV shows, showcasing his versatile acting skills. He appeared in well-known series such as Night Court, Matlock, and Law & Order, earning recognition for his powerful presence on screen.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Todd is survived by his wife, Fatima, and their two children, who will carry on his legacy.
