Cash App Settlement: 1 Week Left to Claim Up to $2,500

69

The deadline to submit a claim in the Cash App class-action settlement is just one week away. A settlement involving two data security incidents and Cash App’s business practices regarding fraudulent transactions and illegal account access might total up to $15 million. Up to $2,500 can be awarded to eligible Cash App customers who submit a claim by November 18.

According to Cash App’s statement with the US Securities and Exchange Commission, a former employee was responsible for the initial data breach. “We determined that a former employee downloaded certain reports of our subsidiary Cash App Investing in December 2021 that contained some US customer information without permission after the former employee’s employment ended.”

The class-action lawsuit claims that 8.2 million Cash App users’ private information was made public online as a result of this former employee’s acts and access to customer data. When Cash App discovered that certain customers’ accounts had been hacked and that illicit transactions had taken place, there was yet another data breach last year. The case claims that Cash App and Block (previously Square), its parent business, have “negligent security features, protocol, systems, screening, and design.” However, Block and Cash App have denied any misconduct.

How to Make a Claim

A claim can be made by any Cash App or Cash App Investing customer who believes their sensitive personal information was stolen via Cash App between August 23, 2018, and August 20, 2024, or who saw fraudulent transactions on their accounts, suspect their Cash App accounts were accessed by an unauthorized entity, or feel a Cash App error resolution was insufficient.

You must present proof that the breach occurred and that you took action to disclose it when you file a claim for transaction-based losses resulting from an account breach. As long as it was made within the previously mentioned time frame, any correspondence with Cash App regarding the incident, a police report, a report with your bank or credit union, a report to the FTC or another government agency, or a report with the Better Business Bureau, for instance, may be sufficient as adequate documentation.

By November 18, 2024, those who qualify must submit a claim on the settlement’s official website. I work as an early-morning tech news reporter for PCMag.
