A 23-year-old man was sentenced to 27 years in prison on Tuesday for the death of his friend following a dispute over $40, according to court records. In March 2022, Jaron Bryce Morgan and his friend, Dvonte Sutton, 21, both from Dickinson, Texas, met to resolve a disagreement over money. (https://duckysonline.com/)
The confrontation quickly turned tragic. Records indicate that Morgan, along with his girlfriend, had arranged to meet Sutton. The two men got into a heated argument, which escalated. Authorities say that after the incident, Morgan left the scene with his girlfriend, leaving Sutton fatally injured. Galveston County Sheriffโ€™s deputies apprehended Morgan and his girlfriend shortly after.
According to the Galveston County District Attorneyโ€™s Office, Morganโ€™s girlfriend had driven him to meet Sutton for what was intended to be a resolution of their disagreement.
Court records indicate that during a physical struggle between Jaron Bryce Morgan and Dvonte Sutton, Morgan allegedly reached into his sweatshirt and took out a handgun. Morganโ€™s girlfriend reportedly tried to intervene by attempting to take the gun, but was unsuccessful. According to the affidavit, a single shot was then fired, which tragically resulted in Suttonโ€™s death.
โ€œMorgan appeared to have confronted Sutton with the expectation of physical violence and, by witnessโ€™ accounts, returned to the confrontation after it was deescalated,โ€ according to the affidavit. โ€œMorgan also appears to intentionally have brought a firearm to this physical confrontation.โ€
Court testimony indicated that the angle of the gunshot wound suggested Dvonte Sutton may have been in a vulnerable position, possibly on his knees, with the shooter standing above him when the shot was fired.
Jaron Bryce Morgan faced a sentencing range of five to 99 years in prison for his role in the incident. Because the jury determined that a deadly weapon was involved in the case, Morgan will be required to serve at least 50% of his 27-year sentence before becoming eligible for parole.
