On Sunday, November 24, Mike Waltz, the national security advisor chosen by President-elect Donald Trump, called for an end to the growing conflict between Russia and Ukraine. “We have to responsibly conclude this. “Instead of reacting to this escalation ladder, we must get ahead of it, restore peace, and restore deterrence,” Waltz stated in an interview with Fox News. The request for talks comes as tensions have increased after Washington approved Kyiv’s use of US-supplied landmines and missiles for strikes within Russian territory.
The conflict escalated when Moscow retaliated with an experimental medium-range ballistic missile. Despite his reputation as a foreign policy hawk and his criticism of Russia, Waltz supports Trump’s cautious approach to expanding aid to Ukraine. Waltz stated, “President Trump has made it very clear that this conflict must end.” We must talk about who is at the table, whether an armistice or an agreement is in place, how to bring both parties together, and what the parameters of a deal are.
In 2022, Russia invaded Ukraine, sparking the start of the conflict, which is now approaching its third year. Ukraine has been fighting to regain land in the east with strong support from the United States. In a strong statement on Tuesday, November 19, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy warned that Ukraine would lose US funding if it gave over any land to Russia. During the transfer, Waltz promised continuity, having met with departing NSA Jake Sullivan.
“Our opponents who believe that this is an opportunity to take advantage of one government against another are mistaken. “We work hand in hand,” he remarked. Moving on to the Middle East, Waltz commended Israel’s determination in its war against Hamas in the wake of the October 7, 2023, attack that claimed the lives of more than 1,200 Israelis. According to local sources, at least 44,211 people have died in the Israeli offensive that followed in Gaza, the majority of whom were civilians.
Waltz urged diplomatic efforts to guarantee long-term peace in the region, saying, “Now is a moment to craft some sort of arrangement that doesn’t just put a pause for future October 7ths but truly brings stability to the Middle East.”
