A Norwegian student in his 20s has been arrested on suspicion of espionage for Russia and Iran while working as a security guard at the U.S. Embassy in Oslo, Norwegian authorities revealed. The man, whose identity has not been disclosed, is accused of engaging in intelligence activities that may have compromised national security. He has been ordered to remain in custody for four weeks as investigations continue.

The suspect reportedly co-owns a security company with a dual national of Norway and an unspecified Eastern European country, according to Norwegian public broadcaster NRK. Oslo police announced that they would review the company’s operating license in light of the allegations. The Norwegian Police Security Service (PST) confirmed that the man was arrested at his home garage on Wednesday after evidence pointed to his involvement in sharing sensitive information.

Court documents reportedly reveal that the suspect collected and transmitted intelligence to Russian and Iranian authorities, as evidenced by assignment dialogues found during the investigation. While the man has admitted to gathering and sharing information with foreign governments, his lawyer, John Christian Elden, stated that he denies any criminal wrongdoing, asserting, “He is charged with having obtained information that could harm the security situation of third countries.”

The PST has confirmed the man’s role at the U.S. Embassy in Oslo, though there are no additional suspects at this stage. PST spokesperson Thomas Blom noted that it is too early to disclose further details of the suspect’s activities but confirmed the seriousness of the charges.

This arrest highlights growing concerns over espionage activities in Norway, particularly following heightened tensions involving Russia and Iran. As investigations progress, authorities aim to uncover the full scope of the man’s alleged espionage operations.
