Michigan GOP Lawmaker Sparks Outrage, Calls for Gay Marriage Ban—Wants It ‘Illegal Again

Josh Schriver, a Republican state representative from Michigan, stated Monday that homosexual marriage should be “illegal again,” opposing a ruling by the U.S. Supreme Court nine years ago that established the national standard and encouraged same-sex marriages across. Thirty days before their majority takes office, and 27 days after the Nov. 5 election in which the Michigan GOP regained control of the state House, Schriver of Oxford made his remarks on the social networking site X. In his capacity as a member of the state House, Schriver is unable to change the law because homosexual marriage is legal in Michigan and other states due to judicial decisions. However, his comments probably reveal how one member of the House’s new majority caucus would handle LGBT issues.

Schriver wrote, “Make gay marriage illegal again,” on Monday. “This is not remotely controversial, nor extreme.” Oxford state representative Josh Schriver, a vocal conservative Republican, stated on Monday that the United States ought to “make gay marriage illegal again.” On X, the social media site that was formerly known as Twitter, openly homosexual Democratic leaders quickly criticized his remarks. Schriver, who received 68% of the vote in his Oakland County district to win a second term in November, has previously made contentious remarks on social media. But Michigan Democrats quickly criticized him, including Attorney General Dana Nessel, who had previously defended the two Hazel Park women who were involved in a historic case that made it legal for all same-sex couples to get married in the United States.

Alanna Maguire is Nessel’s spouse as well. In 2015, the couple tied the knot. “Please explain how dissolving my marriage, or that of the hundreds of thousands of other same-sex couples living in America, provides a benefit to your constituents or anyone else,” Nessel wrote on X in response to Schriver on Monday. “You have no desire to assist Michiganders. All you want to do is harm the people you despise. Disgrace to you.

Rep. Jason Morgan, D-Ann Arbor, who is also gay, also said on social media that Schriver was “saying my marriage to the man I love should be illegal.” “This is definitely both controversial and extreme, along with anti-family,” Morgan stated. Growing up, I thought I would never be able to get married, therefore I’m not going to The U.S. Supreme Court cited the equal protection and due process provisions of the 14th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution in a 5-4 ruling on June 26, 2015, legalizing same-sex marriage. “The court now holds that same-sex couples may exercise the fundamental right to marry,” wrote Justice Anthony Kennedy at the time. “No longer may this liberty be denied.” Now, the U.S. Supreme Court has a conservative majority of 6-3, unlike in 2015.

The Detroit News asked Schriver, who is serving his first term in the House, why he wants to outlaw homosexual marriage and he cited several verses from the Bible. On social media Monday, Schriver also shared a 2004 video of Democrat Barack Obama talking about marriage being “between a man and a woman.” Schriver commented on the video, saying, “America only ‘accepted’ gay marriage after it was thrust into her by a perverted Supreme Court ruling.” When Obama was president in 2012, he publicly endorsed same-sex marriage.

Schriver, who received 68% of the vote in November to win a second term, has previously made contentious remarks on social media. For posting a racist population conspiracy theory on social media in February, Schriver lost his office personnel, budget, and committee assignment, according to Michigan House Speaker Joe Tate, D-Detroit. His posts regarding homosexual marriage Monday followed another tweet he sent on Nov. 25 announcing he was taking a family vacation and shutting down his social media accounts for seven days.
