Mark Your Calendar: Here’s When the $996 Energy Stimulus Payment Will Hit Your Account
As winter grips New York, heating costs pose a significant challenge for many low-income households.
What is HEAP and How Does It Help?
To combat this, the Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP) offers financial relief to help residents manage fuel costs, utility bills, and repairs or replacements for heating systems.
Governor Kathy Hochul recently confirmed the availability of HEAP funds to assist low- and middle-income families, as well as seniors, in staying warm without having to sacrifice other essentials. Eligible households can receive up to $996 in assistance, even if heating costs are already factored into rent payments. Governor Hochul emphasized the importance of this program, stating, “New Yorkers should not have to choose between heating their home or putting food on the table.”
Eligibility Criteria for HEAP Assistance
HEAP provides financial assistance based on household size, income, and heating source. For the 2024-2025 season, the income thresholds are as follows:
- 1 person: $47,890
- 2 people: $62,570
- 3 people: $68,312
- 4 people: $76,681
- 5 people: $83,470
The type of heating source also impacts the assistance amount. Accepted heating sources include electricity, natural gas, oil, kerosene, propane, coal, and wood pellets.
Application Process and Key Dates
HEAP applications have been open since November 1, and eligible applicants will be notified within 30 business days of submission. For those facing emergencies, a separate application period for the 2024-2025 season begins on January 2, 2025. Eligibility for emergency benefits will consider household income, available resources, and the nature of the emergency.
To apply, residents can visit the New York State website or contact their local district offices for guidance. With financial assistance readily available, HEAP ensures that no household has to endure the cold winter months without adequate heating.
HEAP serves as a critical lifeline for vulnerable New Yorkers, offering financial relief during the harsh winter season. By providing support for heating costs, this program helps households maintain warmth and security while easing the financial burden.
