Sid Edwards Stuns East Baton Rouge, Unseats Sharon Weston Broome in Historic Mayor-President Victory
BATON ROUGE, La. – Istrouma High School Head Football Coach Sid Edwards secured a decisive victory in the East Baton Rouge Parish Mayor-President race on Saturday, marking his first foray into political office.
Edwards, 61, won with 54% of the vote, defeating incumbent Mayor Sharon Weston Broome. The victory was consistent across both early voting and Election Day ballots.
“I know a lot of people are in disbelief—none more than me,” Edwards said during his victory speech Saturday evening. “We’re not saying everything has been bad in Baton Rouge, but there are things that need to change. As your next mayor-president, I promise those changes will happen.”
Edwards also expressed gratitude to Mayor Broome for her decades of public service. “The hardest seat to be in is the incumbent because you have a record. People look at what went wrong or where you stumbled,” he said. “Mayor Broome spent nearly 36 years in public service, including eight as our mayor. I thank her for her service and for running a strong race.”
The newly elected mayor-president now faces the task of addressing key issues in Baton Rouge while fulfilling his promise of change.
