What is Birthright Citizenship?
The 14th Amendment to the United States Constitution, passed in 1868, establishes the idea of birthright citizenship, which guarantees automatic citizenship to anybody born on US soil. The definition is as follows: “All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States.” This policy provides citizenship rights to millions of persons born in the United States, regardless of their parent’s citizenship status.
Claims of Birthright Citizenship in Other Countries:
Trump incorrectly stated that the United States is the only country that allows birthright citizenship. Trump also addressed the condition of Dreamers, those brought to the United States as youngsters and raised in the nation. He appreciated their achievements, noting that many have great occupations and enterprises. While expressing openness to collaborate with Democrats on a solution, he blasted President Joe Biden for failing to address the matter adequately. However, Trump stressed that illegal immigration to the United States must be addressed, beginning with the deportation of individuals with criminal histories. Trump highlighted the importance of harsh immigration restrictions and fair treatment for those waiting to enter legitimately. He called for a system that emphasizes persons who understand American ideals, laws, and history. While he favors promoting legal immigration, he insists on strict vetting procedures to assure conformity with US norms.
