Florida Lawmaker’s Bold Move: Proposal to Cut Tuition Aid for Undocumented Immigrants Sparks Outrage
Florida State Senator Randy Fine (R) announced on Monday his plans to introduce a bill aimed at limiting college tuition aid for immigrants living in the U.S. without legal status.
The proposed legislation seeks to repeal a 2014 state law that grants in-state tuition rates to undocumented immigrants at Florida’s public universities. “President Trump has made it clear that it’s time to secure the border and stop rewarding illegal immigrants for breaking the law,” Fine stated. “While hardworking, blue-collar Floridians struggle to make ends meet, it’s unfair to force them to foot the $45 million annual bill for subsidized college degrees for those who shouldn’t even be here.”
According to Fine, the program cost the state $45 million in 2021, with out-of-state students paying three times as much as undocumented immigrants for tuition at Florida’s public universities.
“This is an obvious step to reduce government spending and redirect resources to Floridians who truly need them,” he said. “We must prioritize Floridians, and I’m proud to take action to restore fairness for our citizens.”
