Trump’s Controversial Mexico Ambassador Pick Faces Savage Backlash
No one is pleased that Kari Lake, the television host who has twice failed as a Republican candidate from Arizona, is allegedly the front-runner to be Donald Trump’s ambassador to Mexico.
Lake is expected to be nominated by the president-elect to oversee diplomacy with Mexico, according to Semafor, who based her unsuccessful campaign on imitating Trump on immigration, border security, and election denialism.
After refusing to accept that she had lost Arizona’s 2022 governor race, Lake gained notoriety within her party. The MAGA devotee fell to Democrat Representative Ruben Gallego in Arizona’s Senate contest last month.
The 10-point proposal in Lake’s unsuccessful Senate program aligned with Trump’s strict immigration stance.
It called for the immediate, automatic expulsion of unauthorized immigrants, the completion of the wall at the southern border, and the termination of asylum requests for citizens of nations where criminality is prevalent.
Trump declared earlier this month that he would impose a 25 percent tariff on all items imported from Mexico. This move is expected to hurt the economies of border states like Arizona and may lead to retaliatory tariffs.
Lake would lobby the Mexican government on Trump’s immigration and tariff proposals in his capacity as ambassador to Mexico. The prospect of Lake taking on this massive task was greeted with fatigue and mockery on the internet.
Reason’s Eric Boehm stated, “Tell me you’re not serious about negotiating with Mexico over trade or immigration without telling me ….” “How is she going to have time to do this when she is already Governor and Senator from Arizona?” asked Councilman Tony Heyl of Bridgeport, Pennsylvania.
