A joint statement by TPG, Wildcat Capital Management, and the Seattle Kraken hailed him as a visionary leader whose investments spanned industries and reshaped the global business landscape.
David Bonderman Breathes His Last
Born in Los Angeles, Bonderman graduated from the University of Washington and Harvard Law School. Alongside Jim Coulter and Bill Price, Bonderman founded TPG in 1993, transforming it into a global alternative asset manager with nearly $240 billion in assets and 28 offices worldwide.
TPG’s influence in media and entertainment was profound. The firm partnered with Creative Artists Agency (CAA) for 13 years, eventually selling its stake for $7 billion in 2023. It also acquired significant industry assets, including Cinespace Studios, Studio Babelsberg, and Entertainment Partners. More recently, TPG launched Initial Group, acquiring Hollywood literary management firm Grandview and Untitled Entertainment.
Shaping Industries and Communities
Beyond entertainment, Bonderman’s influence extended to diverse sectors. He led TPG in acquiring Univision, MGM, and DirecTV, while early investments in Spotify and Goal.com showcased his foresight in emerging technologies. In 1992, he and Coulter orchestrated the acquisition of Continental Airlines, a pivotal deal that solidified TPG’s reputation in private equity.
Bonderman’s passion for innovation and culture fueled his philanthropic pursuits. As a board member and supporter of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, he combined his love for music with his commitment to enriching cultural institutions. In 2018, he returned to Seattle, where he had worked as a security guard during his college years, to spearhead efforts to establish the Seattle Kraken as the NHL’s newest franchise. The Kraken debuted in 2021, symbolizing his dedication to community and sports.
A Multifaceted Legacy
Bonderman’s contributions went far beyond financial transactions. His early work as Special Assistant to the U.S. Attorney General during the Civil Rights era reflected a commitment to justice, while his legal career at Arnold & Porter saw him tackle historic preservation and corporate law.
Known affectionately as “Bondo,” Bonderman was a father of five and grandfather of three. He will be remembered not only for his business acumen but also for his ability to bridge diverse industries and his unwavering support for cultural and civic initiatives.
