Stanley, a brand whose travel mugs have become nearly as recognizable as the National Hockey League’s Stanley Cup, has issued a recall for 2.6 million of its travel mugs due to safety concerns. According to a recall notice released by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), the issue stems from the mugs’ lid threads, which can shrink when exposed to heat and pressure.

This malfunction can cause the lid to detach unexpectedly during use, creating a burn hazard for users handling hot liquids. As a result, Stanley has taken action to address the problem and prevent further incidents. If you own one of these mugs, it’s important to verify whether it is part of the recall to ensure your safety.

Stanley reported to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) that the lids on the recalled travel mugs have detached a total of 16 times within the United States and 91 times globally. These incidents have resulted in two reported burn injuries in the U.S. and 38 burn injuries worldwide. Out of the 38 global cases, 11 were severe enough to require medical attention. This data highlights the potential risks posed by the defective lids, further underscoring the importance of the recall.

The recall specifically affects several models of Stanley travel mugs across multiple sizes. For the Switchback model, the impacted products include those with ID number 20-01437 in the 12-ounce size and ID numbers 20-01436 and 20-02211 in the 16-ounce size.

Additionally, the recall applies to the Trigger Action model, which includes the following ID numbers:

• 12-ounce size: 20-02033, 20-02779, and 20-02825

• 16-ounce size: 20-02030, 20-02745, and 20-02957

• 20-ounce size: 20-02034 and 20-02746

Consumers who own these specific models and sizes are urged to verify the product ID numbers to determine if their travel mugs are included in the recall.

Stanley is urging customers affected by the recall to reach out to the company for a free replacement lid. To request the replacement, customers can either visit Stanley’s website, where they can enter their product identification number and, if available, the place of purchase, or they can contact Stanley’s customer service by calling 866-792-5445. The customer service line is available Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Eastern Time. This process will ensure that customers receive a safe, updated lid for their travel mugs.
