In order to face DUI manslaughter and other charges, a driver who was almost four times the legal limit when he struck a construction site in Miami Gardens last month and killed a worker has turned himself in, according to authorities. Yves Erold Altieri, 53, of Opa-locka, turned himself in to the police on Tuesday and was charged with vehicular homicide and DUI manslaughter, according to Miami Gardens Police.
Police claimed that 31-year-old Eduardo Meridas Llanas was killed in the collision, which occurred at 8:30 p.m. on November 18. An arrest report states that Altieri struck a car parked at a red light on Northwest 27th Avenue at Northwest 183rd Street, starting the incident. According to the report, Altieri eluded the other motorist when he pulled over and attempted to stop.
As Altieri was “driving erratically at a high rate of speed, changing lanes aggressively, swerving between vehicles, and forcing other drivers to brake abruptly to avoid collisions,” the other driver pursued Altieri and eventually stopped, according to the report. Altieri struck the construction zone in the 16400 block of Northwest 27th Avenue shortly after.
According to the investigation, Altieri’s speeding car struck Llanes’s car from behind as he had just arrived as a construction worker and had unbuckled his seatbelt to exit his car. To escape getting struck, two other workers who were standing close had to leap out of the way. Llanes was declared dead in November after being evacuated to Aventura Hospital with severe head and neck injuries.
Altieri was also hospitalized and while at the hospital, he showed signs of being drunk “including a strong odor of alcohol coming from his breath and/or person, bloodshot-glassy eyes, slurred speech, and confusion,” the report said. A toxicology report showed he had a blood alcohol level of .305, nearly four times Florida’s legal limit of .08, the report said.
Investigators also found Altieri was driving with only a learner’s license, the report said. Altieri later told police he didn’t remember being involved in the first crash, the report said. Altieri was booked into jail and appeared before a judge Wednesday, who appointed him a public defender and set his bond at $150,000.
