Tennis coach grandson of Bobby Riggs arrested in child sex abuse case

According to police, a tennis teacher from Fort Lauderdale who is the grandson of tennis great Bobby Riggs was taken into custody on federal allegations of child sex assault. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Florida said that Daniel James Riggs was detained Tuesday on accusations of producing child pornography and enticing a juvenile. The 31-year-old Riggs is the grandson of Bobby Riggs, who passed away in 1995 and was a member of the International Tennis Hall of Fame and the world’s top men’s tennis player at one point.

Court documents state that when the claimed victim came forward in September, the accusations against Daniel Riggs first surfaced. The teenager said that although Riggs had been her coach since 2020, when she was fifteen, their sexual relationship had begun in October 2021. According to police, a tennis teacher from Fort Lauderdale who is the grandson of tennis great Bobby Riggs was taken into custody on federal allegations of child sex assault.

According to the authorities, Riggs used a social media app to have sexual talks with the teenager while he was coaching her in tennis. Additionally, he is accused of sexually abusing the child victim while they were traveling both domestically and abroad for tennis training and competitions, including in South Florida. Prosecutors also claimed that Riggs used social media to ask the teenager for explicit images or videos.

In order to conceal his identity, officials claimed that Riggs made several anonymous profiles and occasionally counseled the young victim to erase their correspondence. The FBI was present Tuesday morning, and Riggs was removed from the tennis courts, according to a board member of the Lauderdale Tennis Club. Records indicated that Riggs was still on a U.S. Marshals hold Wednesday after being lodged into a Broward jail. Regarding the arrest, Riggs’ lawyer remained silent.
