Don’t Miss: Ursids Meteor Shower 2024 at Its Spectacular Peak Tonight
In 2024, the sky will be the ideal location for one of nature’s most spectacular displays, which everyone who enjoys rising early can enjoy with their own eyes. The so-called “Ursid meteor shower” is generally overlooked by night owls, who are preoccupied with getting ready for Christmas Eve and the arrival of Christmas Day. The Ursid meteor shower, which follows the Geminid shower one week earlier, is a discrete meteor shower that always coincides with the winter solstice. Jupiter and Mercury are visible in the sky in the Ursids, but only during certain, optimal moments before sunrise.
Because we travel through the meteor stream in space, the Ursids tend to mingle with the Geminids’ peak during the December 13–24 period, when their frequency is relatively high. In favorable circumstances, it can be seen at latitudes in the planet’s northern hemisphere under a dark, moonless sky because of the winter solstice.
Where is the best place to see the Ursids?
During the winter solstice, which occurs in 2024 at 9:21 UTC on December 21, the Ursids may produce five to ten meteors per hour, while occasional outbursts of 100 meteors per hour have been recorded. The area that is most suggested is in the wide countryside, far from large light sources and lying with your eyes to the sky, trying to block the last quarter moon.
