Blockbuster Deal: Marlins Trade Star Pitcher Jesús Luzardo to Phillies for Top Prospects
According to the team’s announcement on Sunday, the Phillies acquired left-hander Jesús Luzardo from the Miami Marlins. Outfielder Emaarion Boyd and infielder Starlyn Caba were two prospects sent to Miami. The transaction also brought catcher Paul McIntosh to Philadelphia. Despite having a history of problems, Luzardo pitched 12 starts for Miami in 2024 with a 5.00 ERA before his season was cut short by a lumbar stress response. During the 2023 postseason, Luzardo started 32 games and finished 10-10 with a 3.58 ERA for the Marlins. His strikeout rate that year was 30%, with 208 strikeouts.
Alongside Ranger Suárez, Aaron Nola, Cristopher Sánchez, and Zack Wheeler, the Phillies have a formidable rotation that Luzardo is joining. The Marlins’ most recent rebuilding effort has been trading veterans for prospects over the last few months. Throughout the season, key players with major league contracts, including three-time batting champion Luis Arraez and standout outfielder Jazz Chisholm Jr., were traded away.
The Dolphins defeat the 49ers 29–17 to maintain their postseason aspirations. The 19-year-old Caba participated in 116 minor league games for the Phillies in 2023–2024 at three different levels. After being chosen by the Phillies in the eleventh round of the 2022 draft, the 21-year-old Boyd played in 198 games in the Philadelphia minor league system. The Phillies assigned left-handed pitcher Tyler Gilbert to create room for Luzardo on the 40-man roster.
