The West Palm Beach Police Department has made public body cam footage that details the events leading up to the arrest of 21-year-old Jailen Tyree Lewis on Sunday afternoon. The incident took place at the intersection of Spruce Street and 20th Street, where police report that Lewis was driving erratically and ran through a stop sign, prompting officers to pull him over.

In an interview, local residents who witnessed the event shared their concerns, though they chose to speak off-camera. According to these neighbors, the incident occurred during a holiday outreach event at a nearby church, where Lewis’s reckless driving put the safety of attendees at risk—especially when he nearly struck a guest who was present at the event.

West Palm Beach Police Department spokesperson Mike Jachles emphasized the danger posed by the suspect’s actions, stating, “He was putting residents’ safety at risk by driving recklessly through city streets, nearly hitting a pedestrian who was crossing the road.” Body cam footage from the incident captures Lewis’s refusal to exit his vehicle when instructed by officers, leading to a struggle as he fought with the police during the arrest.

In the body cam footage, officers can be heard urgently shouting at Jailen Tyree Lewis, commanding, “Turn off the car! Turn off the car!” as they attempt to get him to comply with their instructions.

After being ordered to turn off his car, Jailen Tyree Lewis reacted by slamming the door and attempting to drive off. Officers quickly shouted, “He’s got a gun! He’s got a gun!” as they drew their weapons, fearing for their safety after Lewis was seen nearly striking one of the officers with his car.

According to police spokesperson Mike Jachles, during the traffic stop, Lewis was moving around inside his vehicle, leading officers to notice a firearm tucked into his waistband. In the ensuing chaos, Lewis struck an officer’s car before hitting a second parked police vehicle and then speeding away, continuing his reckless flight.

During the investigation, police discovered that Jailen Tyree Lewis was not carrying a driver’s license at the time of the incident. Approximately an hour later, officers located his vehicle and apprehended him as he was leaving his apartment.

West Palm Beach Police Department spokesperson Mike Jachles expressed relief that the situation ended without injury, stating, “The good thing to come out of this is, we got the bad guy. Nobody was injured. No shots were fired, and there was no pursuit.”

Lewis now faces multiple felony charges, including aggravated assault on a police officer, aggravated fleeing or eluding police, and carrying a concealed firearm during the commission of a felony. Officers also seized a pistol as evidence. Jachles added, “This suspect determined his consequences,” highlighting the severity of Lewis’s actions and the legal repercussions he will face.
