Where is the YNW Melly case headed in 2025?
Rapper YNW Melly has filed a lawsuit against the Broward Sheriff’s Office, alleging cruel treatment during his incarceration and requesting immediate release. The 25-year-old artist, whose real name is Jamell Demons, has been in custody since February 2019 on charges of murdering his two childhood friends, Chris “YNW Juvy” Thomas and Anthony “YNW Sakchaser” Williams, in 2018.
Melly’s initial trial for the double murder ended in a mistrial last summer, with his retrial scheduled for September 10, 2025.
In the lawsuit, Melly’s attorney, Michael Pizzi Jr., argues that the rapper is being “illegally detained under conditions that violate the First, Fifth, Sixth, Eighth, and Fourteenth Amendments to the United States Constitution” while held at the Broward County Jail in Fort Lauderdale.
