Jim Larrañaga Retires as Miami Hurricanes Basketball Coach After Historic Career
Jim Larrañaga, the legendary coach who led the University of Miami basketball program to its first-ever Final Four just two years ago, has announced his retirement. The decision comes amid a challenging start to the Hurricanes’ 2024-25 season.
At a press conference held Thursday, the 75-year-old coach revealed his decision to step down after more than five decades in college basketball. The University of Miami also announced that Associate Head Coach Bill Courtney will serve as the interim head coach for the remainder of the season.
“After more than fifty years in college coaching, it is simply time,” Larrañaga said in an emotional statement. “There is never a perfect moment to step away, but I owe it to our student-athletes, our staff, and the University of Miami to make this move now when my heart is simply no longer in the game. The University needs a new leader of the program, one who is both adept at and embracing of the new world of intercollegiate athletics.”
Larrañaga reflected fondly on his time at Miami, expressing gratitude for the players he coached and the program he helped build. “I have been so blessed to have coached the hundreds of young men who chose to wear the UM jersey and who have gone on to flourish in their respective journeys. I will always be a Cane,” he added.
A Historic Career
Larrañaga joined the University of Miami in 2011 and quickly turned the program into a national contender. His tenure included multiple NCAA tournament appearances, two ACC championships, and a historic Final Four run in the 2022-23 season that cemented his legacy as one of the sport’s most accomplished coaches.
While the Hurricanes struggled to find their footing this season, Larrañaga’s contributions to the program and the sport of basketball are undeniable. His retirement marks the end of an era for Miami basketball, but his legacy will continue to inspire future generations of players and coaches.
As the Hurricanes transition under interim head coach Bill Courtney, the university community and basketball fans alike will celebrate Larrañaga’s remarkable achievements and lasting impact on the game.
