How can I claim the Recovery Rebate Credit on my tax return?
You must file a tax return for Tax Year 2021 to get the third stimulus check. The initial date for filing your 2021 tax return was April 18, 2022. You have up to three years to file prior-year taxes, so you must file a 2021 tax return by April 18, 2025. There are no penalties for filing late if you do not owe taxes. If you owe taxes, you may face penalties and fines for failing to file or pay them by the original due date.T he government may reduce your tax refund to cover outstanding taxes and other federal and state debts.
When filing taxes, software like MyFreeTaxes, H&R Block, or TurboTax can automatically evaluate eligibility for the Recovery Rebate Credit. You can also utilize GetYourRefund.org, which is run by Code for America. If you make less than $67,000, you can use the IRS VITA Locator tool or go to AARP Foundation Tax-Aide to find a free tax site. Before visiting, check with the site to ensure they have filed prior-year tax returns. Remember that since this is the last year to file a 2021 tax return, you must mail it to the IRS. You cannot submit your 2021 tax return electronically.

Do I have to claim the third stimulus check?
If you do not qualify for the third stimulus check based on your 2019 or 2020 taxes, you can still claim the Recovery Rebate Credit, provided you meet the eligibility requirements on your 2021 tax return.
- If you were claimed as a dependent on someone else’s 2020 tax return, you were ineligible for the stimulus check. However, if that changes in 2021 and you meet the other eligibility standards, you may claim the credit on your 2021 federal tax return.
- You did not get the correct amount if your third stimulus check was based on your 2019 return or information from the Social Security Administration, Railroad Retirement Board, or Veteran Affairs.
- If your third stimulus check did not include all of your qualifying dependents, or if your income was reduced in 2021 and you only received a partial stimulus check due to your 2019 or 2020 income, you can claim the remaining funds when you submit your 2021 federal tax return.
Determine the amount of your third stimulus check:
- To determine the amount of your stimulus payment, check the IRS letters you received.IRS Notice 1444-C details the amount you received from the third stimulus check.
- Check your bank statements. If your payment was directly deposited, you can find the amount of your third stimulus check on your bank statements. It should be designated “IRS TREAS 310” with the code “TAXEIP3” for the third stimulus check.
- Request an account transcript. Using Get Transcript, you can request an account transcript to be sent or sent electronically. You can also request a transcript by calling the IRS’ automated phone transcript service at 800-908-9946 or submitting Form 4506-T by mail.
- Create an account at IRS.gov/account. You may find your stimulus check amount under the Tax Records tab. If you filed jointly with your spouse, you will only receive half of the stimulus check amount. To view the remaining half of the stimulus check amounts, your spouse must sign into their own account.
