STANTON, N.D. — Ian Cramer, the son of North Dakota U.S. Senator Kevin Cramer, has been sentenced to 28 years in prison for his role in the tragic death of Mercer County Sheriff’s Deputy Paul Martin during a high-speed chase in December 2023. The sentencing, which took place on Monday, follows Cramer’s guilty plea to multiple felony charges, as reported by The Bismarck Tribune.

Cramer faced charges of homicide while fleeing a peace officer, fleeing from a felony offense, preventing arrest, and reckless endangerment. The most serious charge, homicide while fleeing, carried a maximum sentence of 20 years, while the other charges each carried up to five years in prison.

The incident unfolded after a series of events led Cramer to Hazen, a town approximately 70 miles northwest of Bismarck. Authorities say Cramer fled from police on State Highway 200, reaching speeds of over 100 mph in a Chevy Tahoe. Law enforcement officers attempted to stop him with spike strips, successfully flattening two tires on the driver’s side.

Despite the damage, Cramer continued driving and encountered Deputy Paul Martin and Beulah Police Chief Frank Senn roughly three miles outside of Hazen. The two officers had deployed additional tire deflation devices and sought cover behind their vehicles when the deadly collision occurred.

Deputy Martin’s death sent shockwaves through the Mercer County community, prompting an outpouring of support for his family and fellow officers. The case also drew national attention due to Cramer’s familial connection to Senator Kevin Cramer.

During sentencing, the court acknowledged the devastating consequences of Cramer’s actions, emphasizing the recklessness and danger posed by his high-speed flight from law enforcement. The 28-year sentence reflects the severity of the crimes and the tragic loss of life they caused.

This case serves as a sobering reminder of the risks law enforcement officers face daily in the line of duty and the profound consequences of reckless behavior.
