Following an out-of-order month in December, Supplemental Security Income beneficiaries will also have a rocky start to 2025.

Supplemental Security Income payment schedule

SSI recipients include disabled people and senior folks with little to no income. In 2025, the highest monthly payout is $967 for individuals and $1,450 for couples. According to the Social Security Administration, the amount can be reduced depending on a person’s income, their spouse’s income, their living condition, and if they get additional assistance from the state where they live. SSI payments are issued monthly, usually on the first of the month. However, there are several caveats. If the first of the month falls on a weekend or holiday, Social Security pays out payments on the preceding weekday.

After a month with two payments, there is usually a month with no payments. This month was unique, owing to the 2025 calendar. Because New Year’s Day is considered a holiday, the January SSI payment will be issued on New Year’s Eve, December 31. An SSI payment will still be distributed in January: because February 1 is a Saturday, February’s payment will be issued on January 31. Then, because March 1 is a Saturday, that month’s payment will be mailed out on February 28. No payments will be issued in March, and the schedule will return to normal in April.

To summarize, January’s payment arrives in December, February’s in January, March’s in February, and there is no payment in March. Regardless of when an SSI payment comes, recipients will continue receiving all their scheduled payments until 2025. Receiving two SSI payments in one month and none in another may need minor budget modifications. Regular Social Security recipients will not have their payments suspended in January, but they will see the cost-of-living adjustment, or COLA, kick in. The most recent COLA is 2.5 percent, down from 3.2 percent last year and 8.7 percent in 2022, indicating lower inflation.
