Authorities confirmed on Thursday that the disappearance of a Detroit-area man, who went missing during the 2018 Electric Forest Festival, has been resolved with the discovery of human remains in northern Michigan. The remains, which were found by hunters earlier this week near the festival grounds, have been identified as those of Kevin Graves, a 28-year-old man who vanished without a trace nearly five years ago.

The Michigan State Police, who are investigating the case, noted that while the cause of death is still unknown, there are no signs of foul play. Oakland County Sheriff Mike Bouchard expressed that, while the discovery offers some closure for Graves’ family, the next steps will focus on determining what happened to him.

Graves was last seen in June 2018 at the Electric Forest Festival in Rothbury, Michigan. Authorities stated that, following a brief argument with his girlfriend, Graves told her he was returning to his tent. However, he was never seen again. Despite extensive search efforts, including canine units, volunteers, and divers scouring nearby lakes, no trace of Graves was found at the time.

In 2023, a billboard featuring Graves’ picture was erected near the festival site, appealing for any information about his whereabouts. The recent discovery of his remains has brought some answers to the long-standing mystery, though investigators continue to work on understanding the circumstances surrounding his death.

The area where the remains were found is located in Oceana County, but the missing person report for Kevin Graves was filed in Oakland County, where he lived. Graves’ father, Gary Graves, spoke about the difficult moment when police visited his home on Monday to inform him of the discovery.

In an interview with MLive.com, the 80-year-old father expressed his disbelief at the situation, particularly given the extensive search efforts that had been made in the years following his son’s disappearance. “With the dogs and everything they claim they had running around there looking, I can’t see how we missed him,” Gary Graves said. Despite this, he admitted that he couldn’t fully understand how his son’s remains were overlooked during the search, and he emphasized that he would have to wait for more details to be sure of the exact location where the remains were found.
