Maryland Snowed In: Winter Storm Grips the State with Heavy Snow and Icy Conditions

20

Maryland residents are waking up to a winter wonderland with a dangerous edge, as a powerful storm blankets the state in heavy snow, strong winds, and sub-freezing temperatures.

Winter Storm Warnings in Full Effect

The National Weather Service has issued Winter Storm Warnings across Maryland, with snowfall totals ranging from 5 to 16 inches in different regions. Untreated roads are hazardous, and even primary routes may be impassable during the heaviest snowfall.

In areas like Salisbury and Frederick, freezing rain and ice are adding to the treacherous conditions, leading to power outage concerns and difficult travel.

City-by-City Breakdown

  • Baltimore: The city is under a thick layer of snow with 26°F (-4°C) temperatures. Snowfall is expected to total between 12 and 20 centimeters today, with travel extremely dangerous. Highs will hover at 29°F (-2°C), with a biting low of 18°F (-8°C).
  • Frederick: Light snow and gusty winds dominate this morning. Additional accumulations of up to 6–12 centimeters are forecasted. The high will reach a frosty 29°F (-2°C), with nighttime temperatures plummeting to 19°F (-7°C).
  • Salisbury: Residents face icy conditions with a mix of snow and freezing rain. Untreated surfaces are slippery, and additional snowfall of 4–9 inches is likely. Highs will peak at 33°F (1°C), with lows dropping to 18°F (-8°C).

Travel and Safety Concerns

Authorities strongly urge residents to stay off the roads unless absolutely necessary. With snowfall rates of up to 3 inches per hour in some areas, visibility is severely reduced. Freezing rain has also caused untreated surfaces to become ice-covered, creating hazardous conditions for pedestrians and motorists alike.

In addition to snow-related hazards, gusty winds could lead to downed tree branches and power lines, with the potential for extended outages. Residents should have emergency kits ready, including flashlights, extra batteries, and blankets.

What’s Ahead

The storm will persist through tonight, with snowfall tapering off by early Tuesday morning. However, strong winds and freezing temperatures will continue to create challenging conditions, with blowing and drifting snow impacting visibility.
