Rising Waters: Coastal Flood Warnings Sound Alarm for Delaware Bay

14

Delaware’s coastal communities are on high alert as rising tides and strong winds increase the risk of flooding along the Delaware Bay. The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued Coastal Flood Warnings, urging residents to prepare for potential inundations and hazardous conditions.

The Threat: High Tides and Strong Winds

A combination of high tides, a strong nor’easter offshore, and sustained onshore winds is creating dangerous conditions along the coast. Water levels are expected to rise significantly, with flooding likely during high tide cycles over the next 48 hours.

  • Timing: The warning is in effect through Tuesday evening, with the most severe impacts expected during high tides on Monday night and Tuesday morning.
  • Flood Levels: Minor to moderate coastal flooding is anticipated, with water levels rising 1 to 2 feet above normal. Low-lying areas near the Delaware Bay and tidal rivers are at the greatest risk.
  • Winds: Sustained winds of 20-30 mph, with gusts reaching 40 mph, will push water inland, exacerbating the flood threat.

Areas of Concern

  • Delaware Bay Communities: Towns such as Lewes, Slaughter Beach, and Bowers Beach are at heightened risk, with water potentially encroaching on streets and properties.
  • Tidal Rivers and Marshlands: Areas along the Christina River and marshy regions near the coast may experience overflow.

Safety Measures and Recommendations

  • Avoid Flooded Areas: Residents should avoid driving through flooded streets. As little as 12 inches of moving water can sweep away vehicles.
  • Prepare Properties: Move valuables to higher ground and secure outdoor items to prevent them from being swept away.
  • Stay Informed: Monitor local weather updates and heed evacuation orders or instructions from emergency services if conditions worsen.
