New Year’s Eve Horror: South Florida Man Tragically Killed by a Stray Bullet in Heartbreaking Turn of Events

15

What began as a joyous New Year’s celebration ended in unimaginable heartbreak for a Fort Lauderdale couple. Chris Dillon and his boyfriend, Angel Nunez, were outside Dillon’s home, welcoming 2025, when a stray bullet cut their celebration—and Nunez’s life—tragically short.

Dillon shared the bittersweet moments leading up to the tragedy, describing the love they exchanged as the clock struck midnight. “I grabbed the back of his head and he grabbed the back of my head and forcefully had the most beautiful kiss, it was so beautiful,” Dillon recalled, his voice heavy with grief. Their final words to each other were ones of love: “I said ‘I love you,’ he said ‘I love you,’ and then he fell.”

In the chaos that followed, Dillon struggled to process what had happened. “I did not think he was dead, I did not think he was dead,” he repeated, still grappling with the sudden loss.

Authorities believe a stray bullet, likely fired in celebration, struck Nunez, a grim reminder of the dangers of celebratory gunfire. The practice, often seen during New Year’s and other festive occasions, can have devastating consequences, as bullets fired into the air eventually fall back to the ground with lethal force.

The tragedy has left the Fort Lauderdale community shaken as friends, family, and neighbors mourn the loss of Angel Nunez. Officials are urging the public to reflect on the consequences of reckless actions like celebratory gunfire and to ensure safety during future celebrations.

For Chris Dillon, what should have been a night of hope and renewal will forever be a painful reminder of the love he lost in an instant.
