Shocking Bodycam Footage: Police Take Down Hostage-Taking Suspect in Deadly Fort Lauderdale Standoff
Bodycam footage reveals that Fort Lauderdale officers fatally shot an armed man who was holding his brother hostage. Family members confirmed that Jalen Moore was armed while inside the residence.
Police have released body camera footage detailing the moments when officers fatally shot 22-year-old Jalen Moore, who was reportedly experiencing a mental health crisis and holding his brother hostage last month in Fort Lauderdale. The tragic incident occurred on December 11th in the area of Southwest 25th Avenue and 22nd Avenue.
Authorities received calls from Moore’s family members, who informed them that he was armed with a firearm and was inside a residence with other family members, including an infant. As the situation escalated, officers responded to the scene, ultimately leading to the fatal shooting.
In the body camera footage, officers can be seen conversing with Moore’s grandfather, who informed them that his grandson, Jalen Moore, was going through a mental health crisis. The grandfather also revealed that Moore had a firearm inside the house, adding to the urgency of the situation. This crucial information was relayed to the officers as they assessed the unfolding crisis and prepared to respond accordingly.
In the body camera footage, Moore’s grandfather can be heard describing his grandson’s behavior, saying, “My grandson’s acting delusional, paranoid, and things like that. He got him a pistol.” Moments later, Moore emerged from the house, holding his brother at gunpoint, creating a tense and dangerous situation. The officers, trying to defuse the situation, can be heard repeatedly commanding Moore to drop the weapon.
However, Moore ignored their commands, continuing to pose a threat to his brother’s safety and to the officers present. Fort Lauderdale Police stated that Moore’s refusal to comply with the officers’ orders and his continued actions that endangered others led to three officers firing their weapons in an attempt to protect Moore’s brother and prevent further harm.
Bodycam from one officer shows Moore and his brother walking into view. The officers fire their guns, striking Moore multiple times. He falls to the ground as his brother runs away from the gunfire.
After the shooting, the police department stated that officers immediately administered life-saving measures to Moore in an attempt to stabilize him. He was then rushed to Broward Health Medical Center for further treatment. Despite the efforts to save him, Moore was later pronounced dead at the hospital.
Fortunately, Moore’s brother was unharmed in the incident, and no officers sustained any injuries. The Fort Lauderdale Police Department released the names of the officers involved in the shooting: Detective Steven Smith, Officer Jose Lopez, and Officer Daniel Rissone. Following standard procedure in such situations, all three officers were placed on administrative leave with pay while the investigation into the incident is conducted.
