POMPANO BEACH, FLA. (WSVN) – A South Florida principal has been released from jail after being arrested for allegedly impersonating a law enforcement officer during a traffic stop on the Florida Turnpike.

Dr. Karlton Odell Johnson, 58, who has had a long-standing career in education, was captured on 7News cameras as he walked out of the Broward County Jail on Wednesday afternoon. Johnson, who declined to comment on the charges against him, now faces allegations that could jeopardize both his reputation and his career.

Allegations and Arrest

According to the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP), Johnson was stopped by a trooper on Tuesday when the incident occurred. During the traffic stop, he allegedly identified himself as a deputy with the Broward Sheriff’s Office. Adding to the bizarre nature of the encounter, Johnson reportedly claimed to be the cousin of basketball legend Shaquille O’Neal.

Career and Accomplishments

Johnson currently serves as the principal at Cypress Run Education Center in Pompano Beach. He previously held the position of principal at Blanche Ely High School for 16 years, where he was recognized for his leadership and contributions to education. In 2016, he was named Principal of the Year, a testament to his dedication to students and the community.

However, this incident marks a sharp turn in Johnson’s otherwise accomplished career.

Legal and Professional Implications

While Johnson has bonded out of jail, the charge of impersonating a law enforcement officer is serious and could carry significant legal consequences. Additionally, the incident raises questions about his future in the education field, where trust and integrity are paramount.

As the investigation unfolds, many in the community are grappling with the shock of these allegations against a figure who was once celebrated for his contributions to local schools.

Awaiting Further Developments

Authorities have yet to provide additional details about the traffic stop or the motivations behind Johnson’s alleged actions. For now, the incident leaves an unsettling shadow over the career of a principal once hailed as a community leader.
