Western New York Winter Advisory: Up to 5 Inches of Snow
Chautauqua County and portions of northern New York are still under a winter weather advisory through Thursday at 7 a.m. Up to five inches of extra snowfall is predicted overnight due to lake effect snow, making travel dangerous.
In the heaviest lake effect bands, Chautauqua County may receive up to 2 inches of snow, according to the National Weather Service (NWS).
In the meanwhile, accumulation of 2 to 5 inches is anticipated in Wayne, Northern Cayuga, and Oswego counties. In certain places, gusty winds of up to 35 mph might also result in blowing snow, which drastically reduces visibility.
Travel Impacts Across Counties
Drivers in the impacted areas should be ready for unexpected whiteout situations and slick roads. Due to erratic weather shifts that provide extremely varied road conditions, these dangers are anticipated to affect the Thursday morning commute.
With heavy snow falling only a few kilometers from dry conditions, lake effect snow frequently creates striking contrasts.
The NWS urges drivers to stay aware of changing road conditions, avoid making needless excursions, and factor in extra time for driving. More difficulties will probably arise from blowing snow, especially in wide spaces.
Stay Prepared
Residents are urged to keep an eye on weather updates and use the NWS website or social media accounts to report road conditions or snow totals.
Although the amount of snowfall is predicted to decrease by early Thursday morning, traffic during rush hour may still be impacted by residual icy roadways.
