New York’s Child Tax Credit Is Getting a Major Upgrade—Check Your Eligibility Now!

New York families could soon see significant financial relief under a newly proposed expansion of the state’s Child Tax Credit. Governor Kathy Hochul announced plans to boost the credit, offering up to $1,000 per child under four and $500 for children aged four to sixteen. This proposal, part of her 2025 State of the State agenda, aims to put more money in the pockets of hardworking parents.

What’s Changing?

Currently, New York’s maximum child tax credit is $330 per child. Under the new plan, this amount would nearly triple for families with young children. For those with older kids, the increase still represents a substantial benefit.

Who’s Eligible?

The expanded credit would be available to households earning up to $110,000 annually. Families with incomes between $110,000 and $170,000 would still qualify for a reduced credit.

For example, a family earning $100,000 with a two-year-old and a seven-year-old would receive $1,500 per year—compared to about $660 under the current system.

When Does It Start?

If the legislature approves the proposal, families with children under four could claim the $1,000 credit starting with their 2025 tax returns. The $500 credit for children aged four to sixteen would follow in 2026.

How Will Families Benefit?

Governor Hochul estimates that the expanded credit could help 1.6 million families across the state. For many, this boost will make everyday essentials like groceries, clothing, and childcare more affordable.

“From groceries to strollers, the cost of living is just too high,” said Hochul. “This proposal puts money back where it belongs in the hands of families raising the next generation.”

What’s Next?

The proposal must pass through the state legislature before it becomes law. In the meantime, families should stay updated and consult tax professionals to plan for potential changes.

This initiative represents a bold step toward reducing child poverty and making life more affordable for New York families. If enacted, it will mark one of the most significant investments in children and families in the state’s history.
