According to police, the son may not have been aware of the ‘Halo Law’, which went into force on January 1. According to the Florida Senate, SB 184, also known as the “Halo Law,” prohibits a person from violating a warning not to approach from a first responder who is lawfully performing a legal duty by approaching or remaining within a specified distance of the first responder with specified intent. PSLPD described the rule as a “25-foot buffer” for not just police and deputies but also firemen and EMS. Failure to observe the law constitutes a second-degree misdemeanor. According to authorities, both father and son were detained and brought to the St. Lucie County Jail.
