A collision occurred on Friday morning between a Brightline train and a vehicle in Palm Beach Gardens, resulting in the carโs driver suffering minor injuries, according to local police. This incident marks the third crash in northern Palm Beach County involving the high-speed rail service since August, and notably, it is the second such accident to take place at the intersection of Burns Road and Alternate A1A, located just south of PGA Boulevard.
The Brightline train, which operates on tracks owned by the Florida East Coast Railway, travels along a route near the Intracoastal Waterway. This area is particularly challenging due to the lack of substantial natural barriers or protective structures to prevent vehicles or pedestrians from coming into contact with the tracks. The series of accidents has raised concerns about safety at these crossings, highlighting the need for improved safeguards in the region.
Officers arrived at the scene of the collision shortly before noon to assess the situation. By 1:20 p.m., investigators had completed their work, and the roadway was reopened to traffic, according to a spokesperson for the Palm Beach Gardens Police Department.
At this time, authorities have not released the identity of the driver involved in the crash, nor have they disclosed the speed at which the southbound Brightline train was traveling at the moment of the incident. The vehicle involved in the crash appeared to have sustained only minor damage, though the full extent of the impact has yet to be detailed. Investigations into the cause of the collision are ongoing.
Since Brightline began its service between Miami and West Palm Beach in 2018, the high-speed rail line has been involved in over 30 crashes in Palm Beach County alone. These incidents, which have included collisions with both pedestrians and motorists, have tragically resulted in numerous fatalities. The frequency of these accidents has raised concerns about the safety of the rail lineโs operations, especially in areas where the tracks intersect with busy roads and pedestrian spaces. Despite efforts to enhance safety measures, the rail lineโs involvement in fatal accidents continues to be a significant issue in the region.
The railway, along with state and local authorities, has invested millions of dollars in initiatives aimed at preventing accidents and raising awareness about the dangers of the tracks. These efforts include the installation of warning signs, electric signals at crossings, and other safety programs designed to remind people to stay clear of the tracks and remain vigilant for approaching trains. Despite these significant investments, the challenge of ensuring safety around the rail line persists.
In December, a crash involving a Brightline train and a Delray Beach fire truck left 15 people injured. Brightline later shared a video that seemed to show a Delray Beach Fire-Rescue ladder truck bypassing lowered crossing gates just before the collision on December 28. As a result, four fire officials were placed on administrative leave, and the incident has sparked multiple investigations, including those by the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and the Palm Beach County Sheriffโs Office.
Earlier in August, two separate crashes occurred in northern Palm Beach County, both involving Brightline trains and cars. Tragically, unlike the incident on Friday, both of these crashes resulted in fatalities.
The first of two fatal crashes occurred on August 8 at the Northlake Boulevard crossing, when a 68-year-old man from North Palm Beach drove his vehicle under a lowered safety arm at the railroad crossing. According to the Palm Beach County Sheriffโs Office, the car collided with a Brightline train, leading to the manโs death.
Just over two weeks later, on August 26, a second fatal incident took place at the intersection of Burns Road and Alternate A1A in Palm Beach Gardens. In this case, a 77-year-old man from Palm Beach Gardens drove his car into the path of a northbound Brightline train. Despite efforts to avoid the collision, the crash resulted in the manโs death, as reported by local city police. These two incidents contributed to the ongoing concerns surrounding safety at Brightline crossings in the area.
