TikTok Restores U.S. Services Following President Trump’s Intervention

0

On Sunday, TikTok began reinstating its services across the United States after President-elect Donald Trump announced plans to issue an executive order delaying the app’s ban. This decision provides TikTok’s parent company, ByteDance, additional time to negotiate a deal ensuring the platform’s continued operation in the country.

The social media platform had previously suspended its U.S. operations to comply with a federal ban enacted due to national security concerns. In response to President Trump’s forthcoming executive order, TikTok expressed gratitude, stating, “We thank President Trump for providing the necessary clarity and assurance to our service providers that they will face no penalties providing TikTok to over 170 million Americans and allowing over 7 million small businesses to thrive.”

President Trump’s intervention marks a significant shift from his earlier stance during his first term, where he sought to ban TikTok over data security issues related to its Chinese ownership. The proposed executive order aims to establish a joint venture with 50% U.S. ownership, addressing security concerns while maintaining the app’s availability.

Despite the restoration of services, TikTok remains unavailable on major app stores, including Apple’s App Store and Google Play. Both companies have yet to reinstate the app, pending further clarification on legal liabilities and compliance with the new executive order.

As TikTok resumes operations, discussions continue regarding its long-term presence in the U.S. market. The company’s CEO, Shou Zi Chew, has expressed a commitment to working with the incoming administration to find a solution that upholds user privacy and security while allowing the platform to flourish.
