Colorado Weather Warning: High Winds and Snowfall can affect roads; Travelers are advised to be Informed
Approximately 265 million Americans, or roughly 80% of the population, are under cold weather advisories as freezing temperatures spread across 43 states. A strong winter storm is striking the Gulf states, extending from Texas to Florida and up the Carolina coast.
Record-breaking cold across the country:
On Monday, numerous places reported record-low temperatures, including Colorado Springs (-14ยฐF) and Rawlins, Wyoming (-23ยฐF). Temperatures in Borger, Texas, fell to 1ยฐF, matching a previous record low. Wind chills have made temperatures seem considerably colder, with Fargo, North Dakota, at -40ยฐF and Houston, Texa, at 18ยฐF. Forecasts suggest that Kansas City, Missouri, and Salina, Kansas, may see uncommon record-low temperatures.
Travel disruptions and safety precautions:
Central Texas has already received over an inch of snow, with accumulations continuing throughout the morning. Snow falls in Austin, Houston, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama. Local officials recommend citizens stay home if possible to avoid dangerous driving conditions.
Cold Weather Alerts until midweek:
Cold weather warnings are in force for most of the Midwest until Tuesday morning. In the South and East, alerts are predicted to last until Wednesday or Thursday. Residents are recommended to dress warmly and limit their outside exposure. Temperatures are forecast to steadily climb later this week, with highs reaching the 40s on Thursday and the 50s by Sunday. Dry and sunny conditions are expected to return, bringing some reprieve from the intense cold.
