Winter Weather Update: Overcast Weekend Ends, Cold and Snowy Week Ahead
The wet and overcast weekend is coming to an end, along with the seasonable temperatures that hovered in the mid to upper 50s during the day and dipped into the upper 30s to lower 40s at night. Rain is expected to move out later this afternoon, giving way to clearing skies. Overnight, isolated snow flurries may appear north of the Outer Banks, though no accumulation is anticipated.
Monday: Cold and Breezy Start
Monday will start off cold and breezy due to northerly winds, making it feel like the 20s and teens despite sunny skies by the afternoon.
Tuesday Night into Wednesday Morning: Wintry Weather Arrives
Clouds will increase Tuesday afternoon, bringing the onset of wintry weather late at night and into Wednesday morning. Snow is expected across most areas, although regions south of Highway 12 might experience a mix of wintry precipitation before transitioning to snow. By Wednesday afternoon, the winter storm will move out, leaving sunny skies in its wake.
Frigid Temperatures and Refreezing Concerns
This week will see air temperatures in the upper 20s to lower 30s during the day, with wind chills making it feel like the teens and 20s. Overnight and early morning lows will drop into the teens and single digits. The combination of these bitter wind chills and freezing temperatures poses a concern for refreezing overnight, meaning any wintry precipitation will not melt significantly despite periods of sun and clouds.
Looking Ahead: A Warming Trend and More Wintry Weather
Temperatures are expected to climb above freezing by the end of the week. However, another round of wintry weather is possible late Thursday night into Friday, with temperatures remaining below freezing.
