Man dies after off-duty police officer shoots him at Fort Lauderdale RV park
The guy who was shot and killed by an off-duty officer at a Fort Lauderdale RV park was named by police on Thursday. According to Fort Lauderdale Police, the shooting took place on Wednesday night at the Yacht Haven Park & Marina Resort, located at 2323 West State Road 84. According to authorities, an off-duty officer named Lieutenant Jonathan Bohm was notified by a property manager that a guy was causing a disturbance on the premises. Bohm requested backup from the police and arrived at the site in his unmarked police vehicle with his emergency lights on. The man he met said he was carrying a pistol.
Bohm fired his handgun during the incident, hitting the man. After being taken to the hospital, 49-year-old Damian Orozco passed away. After a disturbance at the Fort Lauderdale RV park, police shot a man. On Wednesday, a man was shot by a Fort Lauderdale police officer and taken to the hospital. Ruth Lenihan said her young sons, ages 7 and 10, saw the entire event, according to Lena Salzbank of NBC6. “My kids could have been caught in the crossfire and couldโve been dead today, so itโs scary,” she stated. “They saw the man holding his shirt up … the cop was saying, ‘Donโt move any closer or Iโm going to shoot you,’ and the man moved closer and my son saw him get shot.”
Lenihan, who had been at the campground for a few weeks, claimed that when she heard the gunfire, a mother nearby seized her sons and dragged them to safety. “A woman grabbed my kids and threw them into a camper, so they called me and I ran up a dock to get them,” she recalled. The circumstances surrounding the shooting have not been made public by the police. According to Fort Lauderdale Police Major Patrick Hart, “the officer made contact with an adult male, then requested other officers to assist with that individual.” “At some point, the officer discharged his firearm and requested EMS.”
According to Lenihan and other neighbors, the dispute was about power. “He was having an argument with the guy about no power,” she explained. As is customary following police-involved shootings, Bohm was placed on administrative leave with pay while the inquiry was conducted. The investigation will be headed by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement. In the past six weeks, Fort Lauderdale Police have been involved in four shootings.
The most recent one occurred at a gas station less than two weeks ago after police believed a driver they were attempting to stop for a traffic check had taken what they believed to be a weapon out of a car. Later, the suspect passed away from his wounds. Investigators claimed that another man was carrying a fire-starting object in his hand when two Fort Lauderdale police officers shot and killed him on January 9. After holding his brother prisoner at gunpoint in December, 22-year-old Jalen Moore was shot and murdered outside his house. Police said Moore was told to drop the gun several times, but he ignored officersโ commands.
